About Us

“Our vision is for a fair, independent and sustainable Australia.”

In 1984 the fiery parliamentarian and champion of the West German Greens, Petra Kelly, made her second visit to Australia. She urged that the various Greens in Australia develop a national identity. Partly as a result of this, just after Christmas of the same year, 50 Greens activists gathered in Tasmania to organise a national conference.

In 1992 the representatives from around the nation gathered in North Sydney and agreed to form the Australian Greens.

The Australian Greens is part of the Global Greens network, with around 70 Greens parties established world-wide. In 23 nations Greens have been elected to public office, and in European countries such as Germany, Latvia and France, Greens parties are part of governing coalitions. The Australian Greens has a Constitution and Charter (PDF - 85KB) which sets out the principles and philosophy of the Greens.

The MidnorthCoast Greens is The Australian Greens group for the Federal electorate of Cowper. It is also the group for the state electorate of Coffs Harbour and for the Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Nambucca local government areas. For anyone who lives in Cowper or has any interest in Cowper, at any level, then the MNCGs is the first point of contact.

All of our activities and policies are strongly guided by our four abiding principles.

These principles are:

  • Social Equality and Economic Justice
  • Ecological Sustainability
  • Grassroots Democracy
  • Peace, Disarmament and Non-Violence

Anyone becoming involved in the MNCGs will not only be guided by those principles, but will also be united with a State, a National and an international Greens organisation seeking to make the world a better place for all, be they rich or poor. It is only the Greens, worldwide, who seek to have all living in peace and harmony on this fragile and very precious spaceship known as planet Earth.

As our votes grows, at all levels, so our influence grows, so important for all. That our vote has been growing can be seen in that there is a Green councillor on each of the three councils in Cowper, there are three members of NSW Legislative Council and, most significantly, FOUR Senatorsin the national parliament. Throughout NSW there are over fifty Greens councillors.

A role and a voice can be assured for anyone who is concerned about the many issues confronting our society, our land and our planet. Come along to our meetings. To find out about meetings please go to our Contact us page and request the latest meeting venue and time.
