Cr Gavin Smithers - Coffs City Council

I was born in 1966 and spent my younger years in South Africa. We moved to Australia in early 80’s and to Coffs Harbour in late 80’s. In Coffs Harbour I worked with the Environment Centre and later chaired the Catchment Management Committee for much of its tenure. I have also done a lot of hands-on landcare work, both voluntary and professional.

I have been fortunate enough to receive affordable tertiary education in natural resource management, and in urban & regional planning. Both are useful in Council work. It is great to see many things which environmentalists worked for are now mainstream: Biological conservation, energy and water efficiency, waste and pollution management etc. are all fields in which Green philosophies have become widely accepted.

My personal interests are mostly centred on the ocean. I enjoy canoeing, diving and fishing. I look forward to a time when conservation of our marine environment catches up with that of our terrestrial environment.
